Now it faces closure. With changing patterns of worship, its centuries-old life run by the Church of England is set to end.
There is hope for a new life headed by the Friends of St Cuthbert's, a registered charity set up to take over the Church from the Church of England.
Powered by cultural and community events, owned on behalf of the Town and of Teesside, a showcase for local heritage from the Saxons to the modern chemical industry, while still offering baptisms, weddings, funerals and worship as it has for centuries.
St Cuthbert's Church is over 1000 years old, founded in 845 AD, its oldest parts dating from the Saxons in the 10th century, making it Teesside’s oldest building. It sits in the heart of old Billingham, by the Green, its churchyard filled with trees, and for centuries, the mother church of the agricultural village. After the First World War, the chemical industry arrived with ICI's massive Billingham factory. In 40 years the village grew to a new town of 40,000 and St Cuthbert's with it, doubling in size with a 1937 extension.
